Hong Kong’s WestK unveils opening season built on international partnerships
Hong Kong’s WestK Performing Arts Centre will open in summer 2027 with world premieres and international collaborations, combining support for local talent with plans to take Hong Kong productions overseas.
The centre is part of the West Kowloon Cultural District, known as WestK: a 40-hectare waterfront arts district beside Victoria Harbour, home to the M+ and Hong Kong Palace museums and several performance venues. The new centre will have four performance spaces, including a 1,450-seat Grand Theatre, alongside rehearsal and artist-development facilities.
Hong Kong Ballet’s Bruce Lee: A Hong Kong Legend will receive its world premiere in September and October 2027 before a planned international tour. Created by artistic director Septime Webre, the ballet will combine martial arts-inspired movement with an original score for orchestra, traditional Chinese instruments and rock band.
International partnerships underpin much of the programme. Highlights include British choreographer Sir Wayne McGregor’s TENDERNESS DATA, exploring physical intelligence, AI and quantum technologies, and the Asian premiere of Marina Abramović’s Balkan Erotic Epic, produced by Manchester’s Factory International.
Huang Ruo’s City of Floating Sounds, co-commissioned with Factory International, Lincoln Center and Taichung Theater, will lead audiences along urban routes using a mobile app before culminating in a Hong Kong Philharmonic performance at the centre in December 2027.
The programme also draws on media and public-sector support. Shanghai Media Group, SMG LIVE and two Shenzhen municipal bodies are backing Wong Fei Hung, a dance drama premiering in July 2027. Combining contemporary dance and martial arts, it brings together creative talent from Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangdong.
Paul Tam, executive director of performing arts at the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, said the centre would support artists through research, development, rehearsals and premieres, while making performances more accessible to wider audiences.
The programme extends into spring 2028 with the return of The Impossible Trial, WestK’s original Cantonese musical co-produced with the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. Its 2025 tour attracted nearly 65,000 audience members across 53 performances, illustrating the potential for locally developed work to reach audiences beyond Hong Kong.
